Should Explorer 6 be ignored by Web developers and designers?

Web Browsers

Recently I had a conversation with a fellow web developer concerning IE 6 problem, which ironically I was having my own issues with IE 7. The question was whether we should continue building websites in support of Internet Explorer 6. He was in a position that he had Web stats and a client with user complaints that the site was not able to rendering properly.

As Web developers one of our missions is to ensure accessibility, semantic markup, and interoperability. What does this mean? Simply put we try to make our work function on multiple platforms being either Web Browsers like Internet Explorer 6/7,  Fire Fox 2/3.x , Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, and On top of that dealing with Operating Systems as well Windows, MAC OSX, Linux, etc.

The problem comes to Internet Explorer 6 support of new Web Technologies, rendering websites properly and of course security.  It’s time consuming, costly, and frustrating to both developers and users.

Personally I have stopped support for IE6 and other older browsers I even put it in my contracts of what browsers I’m developing for. I rather develop to ensure my sites work across current and future platforms for a better end user experience.

Support of Internet Explorer 6 should be ignored by Web developers and designers by now.

IE 6 needs an Old Yeller moment. A walk around the side of the barn, gentle pat on the head. A muffled shotgun blast. Followed by the visual of a flock of birds taking off to the sky.
